With over 126 globally significant banks and insurers tightening restrictions and 33 national and 27 sub-national governments pledging to phase out coal and move to clean power sources, the market climate for new coal plants remains grim.
Coal-fired power plants accounted for the bulk of the rise in energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2018, surpassing 10 gigatonnes (Gt).
China (4,854 TWh), India (1,137 TWh), and the United States account for approximately 72 percent of all coal-fired electricity production (1,054 TWh). China was responsible for 49.4% of global CO2 emissions from coal, led by India.
