The United States Ranked by the Oldest City in Each State #infographic

While independence from Great Britain was not obtained by the United States until 1776, several towns in the country were settled hundreds of years earlier. In the early 16th century, European explorers started landing on the shores of the U.S. to establish settlements, some of which still remain today.

Jamestown, Virginia, is known as the first settlement in America by many. In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, it was established by the English. Jamestown slowly ceased to exist as a settlement after the colony's capital was transferred to Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1699, and today, it's just a historical site.
