"Fake news" used to be a relatively uncommon issue, but the consumption of news and articles has caused misinformation to run wild over the past decade, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Far from a modern phenomenon, misinformation and cherry-picked reports have been used throughout history as a means of manipulation or knowledge warfare. The emergence of social media as a hub for sharing articles, however, has spread "fake news" all over the internet, inaccurate or misleading information perceived as real news.
Further fueled by increased polarisation, as well as the use of the word by former U.S. President Donald Trump can also apply to negative publicity (whether valid or not).
