On February 4, 2004, almost 17 years ago, then-19-year-old Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and some of his classmates launched a small website called Thefacebook.
"Thefacebook is an online directory that connects people through social networks at colleges" the original website welcomed its visitors back then, explaining that it will allow them to "search for people at your school, find out who are in your classes [sic], look up your friends’ friends and see a visualisation of your social network."
At first, limited to the Harvard campus, the service steadily gained prominence and was later rolled out to other schools. By the end of 2004, there were more than 1 million users on Facebook.
