At the heart of American culture are road trips. For a similar cause, the adventure, from the settlers who followed the Gold Rush out west, to college students who exchange their academic duties for the independence of thousands of like-minded Americans, reached the open road.
A car ride is a different form of journey, offering a free feeling where you can call all the shots. With stories exploring national parks, new towns, and cultural activities, many writers who have written classic literary novels aren't all that different.
Inspired by road trips of the past, we turned to well-known works of literature to recreate the routes to some of the most infamous road trips across North America.
