Although some inventions begin to disappear before their planned life span ends, others remain well past their expiry date. For the latter species, Windows 7 is one example, with unbroken popularity one year after Microsoft ended support for it in January 2020.
Windows 7 is now running on tens of millions of computers worldwide, much like Windows XP before it, despite its use posing a possible threat in the absence of Microsoft security updates. And although in terms of private users, this might not be a big concern, organisations that are notoriously slow to keep their IT infrastructure up to date may be exposed to greater security risks.
