In June, the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku zipped past all competitors to claim the top spot in the Top500 research project's twice-annual ranking of the world's most powerful computer machines. In partnership with the federal Riken research centre, Fugaku, which was developed by Fujitsu, was able to conduct almost three times as many computations per second as the previous leader of the list, the U.S.-based supercomputer Summit.
Not only did Fugaku top the ranking in the number of computations per second - so-called TeraFLOPS - but in all four categories in which the project is judged by supercomputers. No other machine has accomplished this feat so far, according to the Riken lab.
