"A hopeless future would be faced by people without children; a country without trees is almost as helpless; forests that are so used that they can not renew themselves will soon disappear, and all their advantages with them."

A Congress of Women at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago suggested a "National Garland of Flowers" made from flowers representing each state back in 1893, when states were relatively new entities. This developed into official designations by state legislatures of flowers. The idea caught fire, leading to birds, trees, fish, food, and much more being official.
