As an increasing number of businesses and companies invest in eco-friendly strategies and advocate for carbon neutrality within their own ranks, awareness of climate change seems to be causing significant change in businesses around the world. Still, for several major businesses, the business model depends on products and strategies that are inherently contrary to the cleaner environment movement, and a recent 2020 study illustrates how plastic waste has risen across many sectors.

In 2020, Coca-Cola, Pepsico and Nestlê were the three biggest plastic polluters in the world, according to the Break Away From Plastic Campaign. This year, thousands of polluted plastic samples affiliated with each parent company were gathered by brand audits carried out by volunteers within the plastic campaign, with Coca-Cola leading the way with over 13,000 plastic pieces examined from 51 countries. Pepsico and Nestlé were close behind in 43 countries with over 5,000 and in 37 countries with 8,000, respectively.
