Instead of soil, vertical farms cultivate plants hydroponically using a nutrient solution, mostly Sphagnum peat moss or coconut coir plugs. They use 70% less water than conventional farming methods, use space efficiently, have high yields that are not seasonally dependent, and minimise the use of pesticides in the environment.
