The World’s Strangest Currencies #infographic

The Money Project is an ongoing collaboration between Texas Precious Metals and Visual Capitalist that aims to investigate the roots, existence, and use of money using intuitive visualisations.

Humans from all over the world have been attempting to use various objects as money for decades. For thousands of years, some types that are common to most people today have been powerful catalysts for trade. Many currencies have had their time or place in human history, from squirrel pelts to parmesan cheese, but were eventually ineffective or made obsolete.

The journey to discovering the right cash was long and fraught with trial and error. Here are only some of the strangest currencies in the world we found in our study.
