What Is Executive Function? And How Does It Relate to Child Development? #infographic

As significant as they are, we are not born with the abilities that enable us to regulate impulses, make plans, and stay focused. Depending on our experiences throughout infancy, during childhood and into adolescence, we are born with the ability to develop these capacities or not. The blueprint is provided by our genes, but the early settings in which children live leave a permanent signature on those genes.

This signature affects how or not the genetic potential is expressed during their lives in the brain circuits underlying the executive function capabilities children will rely on. In practise, these abilities learn and are enhanced by the interactions by which they are implemented and honed.
