On Thursday morning, with the election outcome still hanging in the balance, the 2020 presidential race is shaping up to be one of the closest in American history. If it stands, choosing who is going to be the next president of the United States could come down to one state and a few electoral votes.
As the following chart shows, the victory of George W. Bush over Al Gore in 2000 is still the closest contest to date, with Bush winning 271 electoral votes to 266 for Gore. Back then, because of a controversy about a ballot recount in Florida, a major swing state that eventually determined the race, the outcome was unclear for weeks after election day.
