Faced with a publicity boycott protesting its laissez-fair approach to policing hate speech on its social media platforms, Facebook ramped up its efforts in the second quarter of 2020 to significantly detect and remove harmful content. The organization defines hate speech as "aggressive or dehumanizing words, inferiority comments, exclusion calls or discrimination based on protected features, or slurs. These features include race, ethnicity , national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, caste, sex, gender , gender identity and serious disability or illness.
