Buying U.S. companies debt for environmental reasons has not been a successful tactic over the last 12 months. Yet as the market swells, so-called green bonds are primed for better results as investors pour cash into assets that could help save the world.

"Capitalism and responsible investment are not mutually exclusive," said Stephen Liberatore, head of Nuveen 's responsible fixed-income strategy team, in a telephone interview given on January 24. "And they work really well when they 're done together correctly."

In the 12 months to January 24, the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Green Bond Index — which tracks green corporate bonds — gained about 13 per cent. According to Bloomberg Barclays index data, this is less than the broad investment-grade corporate debt benchmark which returned around 16 per cent.
