The old proverb, often ascribed to Benjamin Franklin, says so. Franklin, of course, lived in a time before electric lights, when staying up late meant burning the oil at midnight and people had good reason to be active during daylight hours. Even so, he may have been onto something, at least when it comes to writing well.
Centuries later, many of us have come to identify as either early birds or night owls with our homes illuminated not only by electric lights but also by the glow of TVs, computers and handheld devices. Around a decent hour, early birds turn in so they can wake up refreshed in the morning first thing. Long past dark the night owls stay involved and appear to sleep later.
