The cannabis policy has been fluid for the last two decades. Over 60 years in the United States it was considered an illegal narcotic drug, and since 1961, when most developed nations signed the internationally recognized Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Specific US states have begun breaking away from federal and international controls, beginning in 1996 with California.
More nations have now also started lifting cannabis prohibitions, beginning with Uruguay in 2016.Several US states have already approved legal recreational cannabis and have even more legal medical cannabis laws. The impressive Gleam Law graphic shows the cannabis laws history, and how far we have come.
