A virus is a microscopic organism that can not survive without a host cell and can replicate. Viruses are present almost everywhere and can infect humans, animals, plants, fungi and bacteria. Some viruses can cause diseases that are so deadly they trigger pandemics worldwide.
While bacteria and viruses can also cause a multitude of diseases and have similar symptoms, they are very different. Bacteria can replicate on their own, and can live in harsh conditions, unlike viruses. Viruses are much smaller than bacteria which is how scientists in the 19th century were able to differentiate between the two.
A bacterium's average size is 0.2-2.0 micrometers while many of the viruses on this map are within the range of 50-200 nanometers, making bacteria 10 to 40 times larger than viruses. However, most bacteria are harmless, with disease affecting just 1 per cent. Many viruses cause sickness, with others unique to the cells that they attack.
