The global food waste amount of the edible component is estimated to reach 1,6 billion tons, or at least 1,3 billion tons. In rich countries last year, consumers were consuming nearly as much food (222 million tons) as all the total food outputs (230 million tons) in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, Europe's food waste will sustain just about 200 million people.
