We live in a material world, in that we rely on materials to make our lives better. Without even realizing it, humans consume huge amounts of metals and minerals with every convenient food box, amazing home, and technological innovation.
The United States Geological Service (USGS) publishes annual summaries of resources for more than 90 individual minerals and materials that summarize global mining statistics. Today's infographic visualizes the data showing dramatic scale of the 2019 non-fuel mineral production.
A wide variety of minerals, including precious metals, base metals, industrial minerals, and construction materials, may be categorized as "non-fuel." Non-fuel minerals like petroleum, natural gas, and coal are not used for fuel. When non-fuel resources are used up, then there is no alternative. But many can be recycled endlessly.
