Most people think happiness comes from inside. In the economic world, however, happiness can be more related to quantitative variables such as unemployment, credit rates, employment levels and GDP growth. This week's graph uses the Cato Institute's Steve Hanke data and visualizes the 2019 rankings for the misery index in 95 countries that regularly report this data.
For the fourth consecutive year, Venezuela is called the "miserable" country in the world. Four million Venezuelans are leaving the country since the start of the economic crisis in 2014, according to the United Nations. Turmoil was further sparked by increasing hyperinflation in Venezuela. Citizens are struggling to provide food, toiletries and medication for basic products.
The Cafe Con Leche Index was specifically created to track Venezuela's rapidly changing inflation rates. Venezuela has not only the highest mark on the Misery list, but its level has risen dramatically over the past year with the escalation of the crisis.
