Four percent challenge’ addresses reel gender disparity in Hollywood

While females make up half of the workforce, females in management roles are still rare, and in the entertainment industry this is no different. A research under the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative(Aii) of the University of Southern California discovered that females directed only four of the top 100 grossing movies of 2018.

At the panel "Making the (In)visible: Radical Transparency in the Data-Driven Age," Jan. 25 hosted with the Aii at Sundance and moderated by Aii founder Stacy Smith, actress Tessa Thompson officially introduced the "#TIMESUPX2 TIME'S UP 4 percent Challenge" to solve the disparity. This challenge calls on entertainment individuals to "announce their dedication to[ working] with a woman director on a feature film in the next 18 months." This commitment was created openly by dozens of individuals in front of and behind the camera, as well as by seven major studios such as Warner Bros and MGM.
