Over the previous decade, active shooter incidents have become an increasingly common issue, particularly in the U.S. In an FBI research of active shooter events from 2000-2018, we see that 2017 was the worst recorded year, with 2018 being a near second. An average of 6.4 active shooter occurrences happened each year during the first seven years included in the FBI research. That average rose to 16.4 occurrences annually in the last seven years of the research.
Especially schools and workplaces are at risk-nearly 60% of all mass shootings occur at workplaces. There have been 236 classroom shootings and 296 lives lost in AmericanK-12 schools and greater education institutions since Columbine (1999). 2018 is the second worst record year for active shooter events–27 Active shooter incidents in 16 countries resulted in 213 deaths (excluding shooters).
Given the spectrum of places at which active shooter events take place, reacting efficiently to such incidents to decrease damage and save life is a job that falls not only to the police, but also to EMS staff, security and public security officials, schools, office staff and members of the government.
