Literature Study Guides1776

1776 is an acclaimed historian David McCullough's best-sale work of narrative history. During his previous book, John Adams biography, McCullough became enthusiastic about 18th and became the subject of his next project in the year that defined America's struggle for independence.

McCullough is turning the reader's attention away from the discussions of the Continental Congress of Philadelphia and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the trials under General George Washington by the Rogtag Army of citizen soldiers.

The book's contention is simple: without the perseverance of Washington and his Continental Army during the hardships of 1776, the Declaration of Independence would have amounted to little more than a beautifully worded document without any material consequences.
