Power over Ethernet (POE) is a networking function that allows a single Cat5e / Cat6 ethernet cable to carry electrical power over an current data connection. PoE technology is based on the IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at standards set by the Electrical and Electronic Engineers Institute and governs how networking equipment should operate to promote interoperability between devices.
