The complicated method by which teeth develop from embryonic cells, grow and erupt into the mouth is the growth of tooth or odontogenesis. All sections of the tooth must grow during suitable phases of fetal development in order for human teeth to have a good oral atmosphere. Primary (baby) teeth begin to form in the sixth to eighth week of prenatal development, and in the twentieth week permanent teeth begin to form. If teeth do not begin to grow at or near these moments, they do not grow at all, leading to hypodontia or anodontia.
