A scientist approached Equifax credit card reporting agency with a straightforward email in December 2016: your website is susceptible to a cyber attack. There was nothing the business did to patch the defect. Six months later, in May 2017, they were infringed with hackers stealing delicate information from 145.5 million Americans.
It is an extreme instance of an all-too-common company failure: that of preparation for cybersecurity. As hacks continue to proliferate the news cycle, targeting big corporations as well as tiny businesses, companies that have not earlier seen a need to invest in cybersecurity training and avoidance are increasingly concentrating on one issue: are we ready for an assault? And the response is, resoundingly, "no."
